Customer Reviews

I was very excited to try these hooks, but unfortunately I don’t care for them…

The hooks are very smooth and yarn glides easily, but the throat/groove is not deep enough to catch the complete strand of yarn. I have split more yarn with these hooks than any of the other hooks I own (Boye [new and vintage], Susan Bates [new and vintage], Clover [3 versions], Lion Brand, and unmarked Japanese hooks from the 50s).

I like the material used for the handles, but don’t like the shape. There is a little thumb bump/thumb rest that is uncomfortable for me. I use the knife hold, so pencil holders might not have this problem, but the tip of my thumb gets sore.

For such expensive hooks, I was surprised to find that stickers are used for the sizes. “Japan” is molded into the rubber handle, but the hook sizes are stickers? On mine, the corners of the stickers were already starting to come up. Yarn fuzz and extended use are going to eventually cause the sticker to pull away completely.

This last criticism might just be my perception, but the sizing seems a little off to me. I use a 4mm hook more than any other and the shaft of the 4mm Tulip looks more like my vintage Susan Bates G hooks, which are 4.25mm. I crocheted a test ball (cat toy) with the Tulip and the ball seemed larger than the one I made using a different 4mm hook. For me, paying this much for hooks means I’d like to have absolutely accurate measurements. Don’t put 4mm on there if it isn’t exactly 4mm.

Again, I don’t care for these hooks. I was hoping I would love them, but I just don’t. I would highly recommend the Clover Amour hooks, however, if you are looking for something similar. They aren’t lovely shades of pink, and they don’t come in a fancy set with scissors and a case, but I do believe they are superior hooks. The yarn glides just as smoothly as the Tulips, yet the throat is deeper and catches the whole strand of yarn. The handle is made of the same material, yet it is flat — no bump for my thumb to rub against and get sore. Hook sizes are molded into the handle, so you don’t have to worry about them peeling off or collecting fuzz. The sizing seems to be accurate. The Clover Amour hooks cost significantly less as well. You could put together your own gift set with nice scissors, yarn needles, and a case! :o)

I will keep these hooks as backups — they aren’t horribly nightmarish to use — which is why I’m giving them a 3 (It’s Okay) instead of a 2 (I Don’t Like It).

If you like to crochet, go for it! I read a review here on Amazon that said something like “yes it’s expensive, but think of how much time you’ll spend using them!”. That made me decide to buy them sight unseen. I now crochet so amazingly fast and smooth! I am amazed! These hooks are a huge improvement over my old ones. I used to grip my old ones so tightly that my hands would hurt and I even got a blister. I also bought the Clover Amour and I like these ones more because the grip is better shaped, not too chunky. So if you like to crochet, buy them! Think of the time you’ll spend using them vs something less comfy. Also, I didn’t realize until after just how nice it is to have all the hooks plus scissors and needle in one case.

These crochet hooks are very, very nice–a very special treat. The cushion on these hooks is of a different material than that on the other colorful brand currently on the market. This Tulip material is very smooth and comforting to my arthritic hands, but not large enough to be cumbersome. The soft cushion on the other brand feels gritty somehow to me, but the Tulip’s cushion is smooth and clean-feeling. I love the varying shades of pink–they are so girly! In this set, there is included a nice zippered folding wallet (also pink) with the pink elastic loops inside for holding each hook, as you can see in the photo. Also included is a little sewn-in zipper pocket which holds a small pair of scissors and a yarn needle–very convenient. What is really different in this set is that there are some sizes I have not seen before in our normal craft store market–like size 4.50 which I believe is in between a regular American size G and a size H. This will be really nice when searching for just the right size for use with a particular yarn. All in all, I recommend that you treat yourself to this set–you will not regret it. Yes, they are a little expensive, but just think of how many hours you will spend holding these–if not actually using them, then just admiring them! Shipping was a little slow on this one as my set came from an outside Amazon seller and was not shipped by Amazon itself, but it did finally arrive safely–or maybe I was in too much of a hurry for them to arrive! (Tracking did not work for some reason) Anyway–Love!

When Tulip Etimo first came out, I bought the gray set and loved them. I was a little leery because I would normally have only used Susan Bates inline hooks. I was pleasantly surprised to find I could use Tulip Etimo and they are so comfortable. Then I saw an online advertisment for a Pink Tulip Etimo Gift set that had only been released in England and thought they were beautiful. I contacted Caron to see if they would get the pink set and they told me to watch for it. This set is different from the first one released in England. It’s case is elegant, pink leather-looking, the English release was cloth. The hooks themselves come in a variety of shades of pink, the English set had just a uniform shade of deeper pink. Have to say I liked the first English set better as far as looks, I don’t care for the light pink shades. From what I can find online now, the English version has been changed to this one also. Taste in color intensity aside, this is a quality set of hooks that are a pleasure to use.
