Customer Reviews

I picked up a single one of these this weekend and was really excited to try one before splurging for the whole set. I love lace work and my interchangeable steel has been out of commission for far too long.

BE VERY CAREFUL with the sizing on these! They are sizes 0-12, but check your mm sizes! These looked small at the store, so I sized “up” to a 4 from my usual 6 or 7, but I didn’t look at the mm. The mm for the Clover’s 4 is what we normally label as a 10 steel. That is a huge difference when working with thread!

I LOVE the handle on this hook. It’s comfortable to hold in either grip style and it’s neither tacky nor too slick for comfortable grip, but I will definitely need to find my finer thread before I can use it for anything. Size 10 thread is NOT going to work on most of these hooks. If you are crocheting very fine work, these are great, but if you usually work lace w/ size 10 floss, grab a couple of the single hooks in the largest sizes instead of buying the whole set. The 4 is too small for size 10 thread and only 2 of the hooks in this pack are larger.

I crochet earrings with tiny detailed stitches and beads and these hooks work perfectly. Very well made with no burs or seems so they move smoothly threw the yarn. Bonus, no more hand cramps so I can get items done allot faster. The little metal sleeves that come with set are a great idea.#1hooks are sharp #2 due to their delicate size the metal sleeves protect them from damage when stored.

This is the second Armour Steel Crochet Hook Set that I am getting. The first set was the bigger sizes and I cannot go back to using normal steel hook after using the Armour hooks. They are light, easy to use, have a good grip and so colorful. I have started to crochet lace recently and my wrist was starting to ache after the use of the traditional metal hooks which is why I ordered the smaller size set.
I was pleasantly surprised that these hooks comes with individual caps which you can use during storage to avoid the tiny hooks from poking thru your bags.

I have several hundred crochet hooks (I pretty much buy every set and style I see), and the Clover Amour are among my favorites. I have owned one set of these Clover Amour steel hooks for some time, and I recently picked up a second set on a Lightning Deal for a great price. They are that good.

The handles are very comfortable, and the head, hook, throat and shaft are all perfect for thread crochet. For yarn crochet, on the other hand, you will need the regular hooks, not the steel. These are for fine thread crochet only. (The ones for yarn crochet are Clover 3672 Amour Crochet Hook Set, 10 sizes, and I own three sets of those.)

The sizes of these are etched in the handle in the Asian style as well as the equivalent millimeter size.

Many Americans will not be familiar with the Asian, especially. First of all, years ago, Americans used a numbering system where, for steel hooks, generally speaking, 00 (double zero) was the largest, for heavy thread, and 16 was the smallest, for the very finest lace threads. The sizes were relative, meaning that they went from largest to smallest for each manufacturer, but one manufacturer’s size 7 might be slightly different from another manufacturer’s size 7. Sort of like buying women’s clothing.

That system became outdated with the use of millimeter sizing, which is much more accurate. Modern American patterns will give the recommended hook size in millimeter sizing, but many will also give the old-style number. However, I still have hundreds of old patterns that give only the old number in the 00 to 16 format.

As with any crochet pattern, it is always best to create a gauge swatch before you delve into the actual pattern.

The two most commonly used old sizes were the 7 and the 10. I would say 75% of thread crochet patterns were in one of those two sizes, and if you add the 0 (zero) size, that would account for 90% of all patterns. The equivalent of the zero size is not included in this set. For the 7, you can use the Clover 0/1.75mm or the 2/1.50mm. For a size 10, use the 4/1.25mm.

These are the best crochet hooks for someone like me with severe arthritis in my hands. They are so much easier to grip and work with because of the cushioned handles. They are color coded for size of the hook, and come in a nice box for gifting. I will use these hooks until I can no longer crochet at all.
