Customer Reviews

I’m only giving this 4 stars because I haven’t really used it much yet because I haven’t worked with thread in a bit.

there are no plastic parts. If you like working with thread but have a hard time handling the tiny hooks this could be your answer. The handle is a G size and the ends fit on and you screw a cover over them to hold them in place. This is the full range of steel hooks.

It comes in a very nice case with heavy protective foam that the hook ends fit into individually along with the handle. The case zippers closed and has a strap for holding on to. The individual hook ends are numbered but it is hard to see so don’t let them loose their space in the case. Also the cap that holds the ends to the handle is removable and not large at all so could be easy to loose.

*Want to add an update. I have used this set extensively and really enjoy it. the coupler that holds the ends in does loosen up frequently but my finger is right there and it’s easy for me to quick tighten it as I work. It would be nice if this had a sort of small gasket to help hold the coupler on but I still really enjoy using this set.

I love this set. But as others have mentioned the screw mechanism does untighten over time. I have found if you cut a small piece of doily thread and insert it around the handle where the screw mechanism screws to the handle so the thread is under the screw mechanism and then tighten the screw down normally with the thread inside between the handle and the screw pin this keeps the screw from untightening. I hope everyone understands what I mean. The small amount of thread must be held in place between the screw mechanism and the handle mine usually lies inside the grooves of the handle where the screw mechanism is screwed down. This holds the screw in place and you don’t have to continue to tighten it every few minutes.

It is a very clever idea – one handle with replaceable heads – however it does not have a good mechanism. The heads have to be screwed in, and no matter how tightly I screwed them in, they would always come undone while I was working on a project. The hook heads themselves are fantastic, but every 3 minutes I would have to stop and re-tighten the head onto the handle. I have sent the company an email almost a year ago now, and I still have not received a response from them. I ended up buying regular crochet hooks – I feel as though I just wasted money on this product. I’m very disappointed with the product and the poor customer care.

P.S – it seems like the best reviews are a result of the amount of hooks in the set and not how well they function.

Steel crochet hooks are generally used with lace weight yarns and crochet threads. They are sized differently than regular hooks: the higher the number, the smaller the hook, which is the reverse of regular hook sizing. The smallest steel hook is a #14 or .9 mm; the largest is a 00 or 2.7 mm.

For a huge variety of colors, I like to crochet with 1 – 3 strands of embroidery thread. I bought this set because I was having trouble finding a few of the smaller sizes of steel hooks.

-As you would expect, these hooks are smooth & your thread will slide right through without catching.
-The handle is larger & easier to hold than a regular steel hook.
-The hook size is listed on the case, and on the base of the hook that is inserted into the handle.

To use these hooks, remove the locking nut head from the handle, insert the base of the hook you’ll be using into the handle, slide the locking nut head over the hook, and screw it firmly onto the handle. And that’s where the main/only problem begins, the locking nut head will need to be tightened off & on while you’re crocheting.

Thread substitute guide I found in a magazine several years ago:
6 strands of embroidery floss = sz 5 thread
4 strands = sz 10
2 strands = sz 20
1 strand = sz 30 or 40 thread**

**When I posted this information on Ravelry, a crafter with experience using fine threads replied to me:
“1 strand of embroidery floss is equal to size 80 crochet cotton or #70 tatting thread.”
I thought I’d post the info here so you can draw your own conclusion.

These last two substitutes will be too big for steel hooks. You would use a small aluminum/regular hook:

2 strands of #10 thread held together = sportweight yarn

This info was listed on a baby dress pattern:
DMC Senso or #3 thread or RedHeart Lustersheen = 2 strands of crochet thread held together

UPDATE: As some reviewers have mentioned the locking nut sometimes comes loose while you’re crocheting. One reviewer, Crochetshannon, mentioned putting a piece of crochet thread under the locking nut, then tightening it. I haven’t had too much trouble with the nut loosening, but I’m pretty sure Crochetshannon’s idea will work.

This is a great set for use with threads. I like the idea of having several hook sizes that can all use the same handle. The drawback was the cap holding the hooks in would always work loose. I solved this by using a small amount of pipe thread tape my husband had in the garage. The cap holds in place and I can still change the hooks when I need to.

This is a great item if you know someone who is serious about crochet. First of all, it has the hooks that are very hard to find on an individual basis. If you are into making doilies or doing any kind of thread crochet, this is definately the set for you. I got it here on Amazon at a great price. I saw the same set at Joann’s Fabrics for $30. I got it here for half that price and it has been worth every penny.
